Lachlan Lam could be set to join the Leigh Leopards exodus at the end of the season. According to Rugby League Live, Lam has been offered to other Super League clubs ahead of the off-season over the last two weeks with Lam and his representatives activating a clause in his contract that allows him to leave the club.
Lam is contracted until 2025, but the break clause allows him to pursue options elsewhere and it would seem Super League clubs are on alert. There is some controversy, though, with the report claiming the Leopards are disputing the legitimacy of the clause, which they believe would only be activated in the event of interest from the NRL.
Whether Lam will leave the Leigh Sports Village at the end of the season remains to be seen then, but in light of the report, we take a look at five potential destinations for the half-back.
Josh Drinkwater is approaching the final few months of his contract at the Halliwell Jones Stadium and at this stage, it seems he could be set to leave the club. Warrington aren’t expected to be too busy in terms of recruitment but should Drinkwater leave, he will need replacing.
Of course, George Williams remains with the club but Lam could be seen as the ideal partner for him in the halves should they make a move. Given the geographical distance between the two clubs, it’s a switch that would suit the Papua New Guinea international, too.
Salford look set to lose Cade Cust to Hull FC over the off-season. It’s not a deal that has been confirmed by either club or the player, but according to reports, he will become the Black and Whites’ seventh 2025 signing. That opens up a hole to fill in Paul Rowley’s spine then and Lam could be seen as an option to fill it.
Paul Rowley has done a remarkable job once more this season at Salford and the addition of the Lance Todd Trophy winner might just help them take the next step in their journey.
The Tigers aren’t exactly blessed with depth in the halves and with Jacob Miller and Rowan Milnes taking the club through the season, they could be set to show an interest in the Leigh man. They’ve had their struggles in terms of creativity, and with a quota spot still to fill, Lam would bring a new dynamic to their attack in 2025.
For the player, the switch would surely be relocating to West Yorkshire, but it’s an opportunity to become the star name in a side looking to take steps forward and progress under Craig Lingard.
Toulouse aren’t in the Super League, of course, but with the club faring well in the IMG grading, there is confidence in the south of France that they will be welcomed into the top flight next season. Wakefield Trinity are the clear favourites for promotion, but with Olly Russell set to join the West Yorkshire side to play alongside Mason Lino and Myles Lawford, they appear full up in the halves.
Should they get the green light to step up, Toulouse would be looking for top flight recruits and the addition of Lam would certainly make sense.
According to the reports, Leigh believe Lam’s clause will only become active should an NRL team make an approach and a move back Down Under could well materialise. Lam spent three seasons playing first grade with Sydney Roosters, where he made 31 appearances. However, after two and a half years with Leigh, he’ll feel as though he has improved as a player and would return home as a better, more well-rounded individual for the experience.
