Georgii Merkulov, a 23-year-old prospect for the Boston Bruins, is hoping for another opportunity with the team’s NHL squad this coming season. Merkulov aims to gain a larger role next season after spending a brief run with the Bruins this past season. Going into the upcoming season, the primary area of improvement will be defensive play. The native of Russia had a strong season the previous year in Providence. He was rewarded with a few games with Boston the previous season because of it. Merkulov showed consistency and significant improvement in his game with Providence compared to his initial recruitment. Because of this, he was given the opportunity to play in the NHL this past season by Bruins management. When the new season begins, he expects to have another opportunity with the team. In addition, he anticipates earning another chance as the 2024–2025 season draws near. 2019 saw Merkulov move to the US and sign with the USHL’s Youngstown Phantoms. He spent a total of two seasons as a player for the Phantoms. Merkulov scored six goals and provided 27 assists for 33 points in 36 games during his first campaign with Youngstown. He was able to sharpen his performance all around and score points per game in his second season. In 38 games, he scored 40 points in total. Merkulov chose to attend the Big Ten Conference of the NCAA following his two seasons in the USHL. He made the choice to play for the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2021–2022. Merkulov made a great impression on the Buckeyes during his first campaign. NHL scouts from all around the league took notice of him as a result of this. During his career at Ohio State, the 5’11” forward scored 34 points in 36 games with 20 goals and 14 assists. Merkulov showed off his amazing acceleration and speed on transition plays. Merkulov forfeited the remaining years of his NCAA eligibility after his freshman year at Ohio State. Merkulov signed a three-year entry-level contract to join the Bruins organization. Merkulov could contribute more to the NHL if he played on the wing for the Bruins, given his remarkable speed and cutting ability.
