Chelsea braced for midfielder transfer blow as Premier League rivals launch formal bid for target

Celtic are bracing themselves for offers for O’Riley with Brighton the first to make a bid for the midfielder’s services as they move ahead of Chelsea in the race

Brighton have reportedly lodged a ‘formal bid’ for Celtic’s midfield maestro, Matt O’Riley.

The Danish sensation has been the centre of attention this transfer window, with Atalanta seeing five unsuccessful bids. This move has opened up the field for other interested parties, and it seems Brighton are now leading the charge.

Sky Sports [via Daily Record] reports that the Seagulls have made a ‘formal bid’ for O’Riley, and have overtaken Chelsea in the race for his signature. While no agreement has been reached yet, discussions are expected to continue ‘over the next few days’.

The exact figure of Brighton’s offer remains undisclosed, but Celtic are believed to be holding out for around £30m. Boss Brendan Rodgers commented on the situation on Sunday, stating: “There is a value we have for him, and if that’s not met he will be here – it’s as simple as that.

“You see with him that he is an incredibly talented player. He is really happy here, but it has to be something that draws him away.

“I am not overthinking it. We all know the model here at Celtic – players will improve and they will get to a level that get beyond, not the club, but in terms of the financial salary. But until that comes we continue to work with him.”
