Disability Pride Month honored Camille Proctor as one of its Game Changers.

DETROIT: When Camille Proctor found out in 2008 that her son had been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), she will never forget how she felt. And one of the hardest things Proctor found when she started looking for assistance for her son was how different the African American society was when it came to understanding autism.

“It was very frustrating because my son didn’t show the classic signs of autism, which made the diagnostic process difficult,” Proctor said. “And for someone with an invisible handicap, it might be challenging to navigate after receiving the diagnosis. There was no culturally appropriate support available to my community, and none was known about.”

Thus, in 2009, Proctor established The Color of Autism Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to enlightening and supporting African American families impacted by autism spectrum disorders. With the goal of empowering families through early detection of autism symptoms, the organization aims to enhance the lives of children on the autism spectrum in underprivileged communities.

Proctor expressed her pleasure in the expansion of the foundation’s Spectrum of Care program, a specialty effort that offers a range of services designed to give people in need comprehensive support.

Proctor stated, “Research studies have been conducted on our training programs.” “We have demonstrated the effectiveness of education and training for parents, as well as how simulation data can significantly enhance the lives of individuals affected by autism.”

The Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Tigers, and Comerica Bank present the 2024 Disability Pride Month Game Changers series, which honors those who are dedicated to having a significant impact on the community. Proctor is the last honoree of this series.

Being acknowledged by your community has great meaning, according to Proctor. “I’m really appreciative.”
