Klay Thompson Could Make The Mavericks Champions Next Year

Newzlines

Klay Thompson may have left the Golden State Warriors, but he is still joking around with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. Taking to his Instagram story, Thompson shared a video that made fun of his eventual meeting against the Golden State Warriors next season.

The clip Thompson shared was from the movie ‘You Got Served’. Thompson put his own name on the character of Sonny, who in the movie, betrays the protagonists, and helps their rivals by teaching them their dance routine. Fans might wonder why Thompson used this clip, considering Sonny and the antagonists lose to the protagonists, who were labeled as Draymond and Curry in this video.

Clearly, there are no hard feelings between Thompson, Curry, and Green over his departure from the Warriors, which is good to see.

However, the same cannot be said about Thompson and the Warriors organization as a whole. Klay wanted to stay with them, but they reportedly refused to pay him what he was looking for, rejecting his final offer of two years, $40 million.

Thompson would sign with the Mavericks for three years, getting paid $50 million in that period. Thompson will join the NBA Finalists, as they add some more firepower around Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving in their quest to return to the NBA Finals next year.

Fans may have been worried seeing Thompson’s footage from a recent pick-up game, but realistically, a player with Thompson’s injury history and of his age can’t be expected to give his 100% during a friendly pick-up game. We will have a better understanding of Thompson’s level and fit with the Mavericks.

Klay Thompson is a very good pick-up for the Mavericks. Not only is he still a solid and reliable scorer, but he brings with him something invaluable – championship experience. Outside of Kyrie Irving, no one on the Mavericks roster has had experience winning an NBA championship until Klay’s arrival.

Thompson was an integral part of the Warriors’ dynasty, as he played big minutes and made big shots in the Warriors’ four NBA championship wins between 2015 to 2022. No one can put a price on that kind of experience, and Thompson brings a great degree of maturity to the squad.

Thompson is no longer the elite defender he was before his knee injuries. But if he can bring himself to a competent level, or anything close to his pre-injury level, he can be the most important defender on the roster, especially considering the backcourt of Doncic and Irving isn’t exactly known for their defensive skills.

Last season, Thompson averaged 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists with the Warriors. Thompson providing a similar level of scoring will be a big boost to the roster.

Mavericks GM Nico Harrison called the acquisition of Klay Thompson a no-brainer for the franchise. This move does make the Mavericks one of the best teams in the Western Conference.

Unlike in the Warriors last season, Thompson doesn’t have to be one of the best players on the court, but rather, just be consistently good and score double-digit points, which is what the Mavericks need.
