LeBron James is expected to decline his player option with the Los Angeles Lakers for next season, which means other teams could be free to pursue him as a free agent in the near future. One Eastern Conference contender has been consistently mentioned as a potential suitor for the four-time NBA MVP.
Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reiterated on Sunday that the Philadelphia 76ers are determined to add a third star player to pair with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. James was mentioned as one target.
The Sixers have more than $60 million in salary cap space, so they are in a position to add a max player. They may need to use some of that money to sign Maxey to an extension however.
There has been no real indication that LeBron is considering leaving the Lakers. Though, the fact that his son Bronny is entering the NBA could complicate the situation. If LeBron decides he wants to prioritize playing with Bronny, the 76ers are reportedly one team that is willing to draft the younger James in order to make a run at LeBron.
The 76ers are said to view another player as a perfect fit for their current team, but they are leaving all of their options open.
