Leigh Leopards /Castleford Tigers Women Report

Leopards made it lucky 13 and set several new club records as they continued to scorch a trail through the Championship season.

With just three league games to go before the play-offs, Kieron Purtill’s side are well on target to record a 100 percent league record having scored 666 points and conceded only 58 so far.

Eleven different try-scorers accounted for 18 tries at Twist Lane as the ruthless Leopards just failed to reach the century mark.

Charlotte Melvin, who’d scored a club record 28 points in the Leopards’ previous record 84-0 win at Tigers in April, went four better in the return.

She scored two tries and kicked 12 goals for a monster 32-point haul, passing 200 points for the season along the way. She’s now scored 13 tries and kicked 76 goals for 204 points.

Fullback Hattie Dogus scored her fifth hat-trick of the season on her way to extending her club record to 20 tries for the campaign.

There were try doubles for winger Freya Turner, and forwards Eleanor Dainty, Sam Brazier and Claire Mullaney.

Rhianna Burke, Kate Howard (with her 15th of the season), and captain Mairead Quinn also got in on the scoring act.

To complete the contributors were Kim Seddon, who has rejoined the club permanently from Warrington Wolves having played for the Leopards on dual registration last season, and Robyn Bell-Soppelsa.

Bell-Soppelsa has bravely fought back from a serious ACL injury sustained last season and celebrated her return with an impressive half-hour stint and a late try, the most popular of the afternoon. She won the coach’s Player of the Match award.

From the moment Seddon crossed for a second minute try the Tigers were in for an afternoon of damage limitation on a dry and fast surface at Twist Lane.

Playing with spirit and determination the Tigers were hoping to progress further from their recent win over Hull KR, their first of the season.

Despite the scoreline they put the Leopards under pressure at times and deserved their consolation try just after the midway point of the second half.

They never threw in the towel and that spirit and determination will stand them in good stead as they rebuild.

Leopards have loftier ambitions and are aiming to hit peak form ahead of the play offs in September which will determine whether they reach their Super League goal.

Ten first half tries set up a 54-0 half-time lead and eight more followed in the second half before referee James Jaundrell blew for time.

Dogus’s brilliant broken-field running, classy combination from the backs and determined forward play all featured strongly in Leopards’ compelling display.

The 18 tries were shared evenly, nine apiece, between forwards and backs, which summed up the all-round excellence of the Leopards.

Leopards are next in action at Hull KR next Sunday (11 August, 2pm), then have a break until Bradford Bulls are the visitors.

The Bradford Bulls game will see a switch of venue to Leigh Miners Rangers Academy at Sutton Park and will be played on Saturday 31 August with a 2pm kick-off.
