Luka Doncic On Joining Slovenian National Team

Luka Doncic, balancing the NBA Finals with the Dallas Mavericks, could join the Slovenian team just in time for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Athens.

Slovenia’s roster for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) in Athens, Greece, has been announced, headlined by Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic.

However, Doncic is currently preparing for the 2024 NBA Finals, where his Mavericks will face the Boston Celtics in a best-of-seven series. This could limit his rest time before national team duties.

NBA players are allowed to join their national teams starting June 17, but Doncic might not be able to do so. The NBA Finals could end as early as June 14 (Game 4) or as late as June 23 (Game 7).

The FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament begins on July 2. Given some days for rest, Doncic would likely join the Slovenian national team just in time for the tournament. In preparation, Slovenia will play against Lithuania (twice) and Brazil, starting on June 23.

Slovenia is placed in Group A, alongside New Zealand and Croatia. They will face New Zealand and Croatia in the group stage, with a possibility of meeting Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Greece or Karl-Anthony Towns’ Dominican Republic in the next round.
