BOSTON — Home plate umpire Paul Clemons ejected Wilyer Abreu during the third inning Monday after the Red Sox right fielder argued balls and strikes.
Abreu was thrown out after he struck out swinging on a 3-2 pitch. He likely was upset over the fourth pitch, a 3-0 sinker from Blue Jays starter José Berríos that landed slightly outside the zone but Clemons called it a strike. Abreu also didn’t swing at the fifth pitch, a sinker that clipped the upper-outside corner of the zone.
Abreu went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts. Tyler O’Neill moved from left field to right field in the top of the fourth inning. Rob Refsnyder entered the game in left field and took Abreu’s second spot in the batting order.
