BOSTON — Home plate umpire Paul Clemons ejected Wilyer Abreu during the third inning Monday after the Red Sox right fielder argued balls and strikes.

Abreu was thrown out after he struck out swinging on a 3-2 pitch. He likely was upset over the fourth pitch, a 3-0 sinker from Blue Jays starter José Berríos that landed slightly outside the zone but Clemons called it a strike. Abreu also didn’t swing at the fifth pitch, a sinker that clipped the upper-outside corner of the zone.

Abreu went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts. Tyler O’Neill moved from left field to right field in the top of the fourth inning. Rob Refsnyder entered the game in left field and took Abreu’s second spot in the batting order.

The 25-year-old Abreu is batting .266 with a .336 on-base percentage, .497 slugging percentage, .833 OPS, 14 home runs, 27 doubles, two triples, 50 RBIs, 52 runs, 34 walks and 101 strikeouts in 103 games (354 plate appearances) this season.

Abreu’s strikeout was the second out of the third inning. Triston Casas, the next hitter, singled to left field to knock in Jarren Duran and give Boston a 1-0 lead. The Blue Jays now lead 5-1 in the fifth inning.
