San Antonio signing: Spurs surprising addition has familiar feeling

Keep a watch on things.Malachi Flynn, a free agent guard, has agreed to a one-year contract with the San Antonio Spurs. With this contract, the organization’s 21 roster positions are fully filled. Flynn was traded twice in one season and concluded his career with the Detroit Pistons. After being traded from the Toronto Raptors, who selected him 29th overall in the first round of the 2020 NBA Draft, he appeared in 14 games for the New York Knicks.

The Spurs might be preparing to make a different move.
This offseason, San Antonio has already been very busy. To bolster the roster for the upcoming season, they have made a number of deals, but one of them served as a springboard for another. The transfer of Devonte’ Graham to Charlotte created the cap space required for Chris Paul to be signed. Since Flynn was selected from the free agent pool, this feels a little different, but from a basketball perspective, his addition is illogical.

Since the Spurs already have 15 players with guaranteed contracts, they would need to make a trade or waive a player in order to retain Flynn. There was no shortage of candidates from their Summer League squad to step in if all they needed was a body for training camp. It’s evident that there is now a bottleneck from positions one through three. Of all the players on the squad, Keldon Johnson has been the subject of the most trade rumors; in fact, many are surprised that he is still with the team.

However, you have to question whether they are still working on a deal because he sports the same jersey number as Chris Paul and it is still unclear who is wearing which number.

The NBA is good for a pleasant surprise, while there are still a few players like Anfernee Simons and Brandon Ingram who are thought to be on the move. If the team decides to bring in someone who was never considered, don’t be shocked. That would be very Spurs-like of them to do.
