Shaquille O’Neal On Luka Doncic Amidst $500 Million Lucrative Contract Talks

Luka Doncic has been nothing but phenomenal for the Dallas Mavericks. He might just end up as the greatest player in the Mavericks history.

As a reward, he has been earmarked to sign a massive contract extension next offseason. This extension could be worth $346 million. The amount could see him earn a whopping $100 million per year by 2031.

One person who knows a thing or two about financial sustainability, Shaquille O’Neal, had something to say about it. He spoke with Pat McAfee recently on the ex-NFL star’s show. During the conversation, Shaq offered Luka Doncic advice on how to manage his finances. The advice involved the Slovenian superstar having to defer some of his payments in order not to get excessively billed by taxes.

Luka is about to get $100 million. If I was him, I would say, ‘Okay, just pay me $20 million this year and defer that $80 million, just defer it to when I’m done playing.’ Because you know that $80 million is not gonna be $80 million after taxes, just pay me $20 million, and the other $80 million after taxes just put it away. Doncic arrived in the NBA with a strong reputation following his time at the Euro League. Since his NBA debut, the Slovenian superstar has seen his stock rise tremendously. He led the Dallas Mavericks’ failed attempt at a second NBA title last season, and the team truly believes in him.

One must note that Doncic had to hold down the fort in the last many years. Before Kyrie Irving arrived, Doncic did not have a superstar as his teammate. Still, he took the Mavericks to the Western Conference Finals in 2022. As such, it is only natural for the team to keep hold of Doncic.

Furthermore, he finished last season as the league’s top scorer. Doncic averaged 33.9 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 9.8 assists. Shaquille O’Neal, who famously blew away his first NBA contract in less than an hour has made himself a model for how ex-professionals can remain wealthy after retirement.

It was a season to remember for Luka Doncic as he was one of the league’s best-performing players, terrorizing defenses with his shooting prowess. When the season ended, he was rightfully named to the league’s All-NBA First Team.

Furthermore, as the news of his place among the league’s elite trickled in, he also qualified for the mind-blowing super max contract. ESPN’s Bobby Marks broke down the amount Doncic would earn. He reported that the extension would make it the largest contract in the history of the league. A contract extension is not an end for Doncic. He wants to win more accolades.

Last season, Doncic finished third in the league’s MVP voting, behind winner Nuggets Nikola Jokic and OKC Thunder Shai Gilgeous-Alexander . The new season would test to see if he can take the Mavs to greater heights this upcoming season. As such, winning the MVP and an NBA championship remains important for the Slovenian superstar.
