Super League Clubs Face Hooker Selection Issues After Suspension Blows

St Helens and Wigan Warriors make appeal decisions as both clubs face hooker crisis

St Helens will appeal the charge issued against their playmaker Moses Mbye in the hope of clearing him to play in Friday’s derby against Wigan Warriors. Mbye has received a one-match suspension for a late tackle in the club’s shock defeat to Castleford Tigers on Friday.

But the club hopes to overturn the decision, with a hearing to take place on Tuesday. It appears to be of particular importance to Saints given their other hooker, Daryl Clark, missed their last outing with a muscle injury and remains a doubt to take on the Warriors. Mbye started in his absence but his unavailability would provide further selection headaches for coach Paul Wellens.

Meanwhile, Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet has confirmed the club will not appeal the suspension handed to their own star hooker, Brad O’Neill. The England international has been charged for a dangerous tackle on Robbie Mulhern in the club’s victory over Leigh Leopards last week.

It means that Wigan have been plunged into a selection issue at hooker of their own. Kruise Leeming and Tom Forber are both currently injured, meaning the club’s three recognised hookers are all unavailable for selection in one of the biggest games of the season.
