The Bruins captain, who missed the beginning of training camp after three offseason surgeries, returned to practice last week and was in the lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Flyers.

But he played just five first period shifts for 4:12 worth of ice time. The Bruins announced that he’d left with an illness leaving Jim Montgomery to scramble his lines for most of the game.

“That’s why he didn’t practice yesterday. He wasn’t feeling good two days ago,” Montgomery said after the game. “When he showed up this morning, he felt god, but it came back.”

The Bruins opened the game with Marchand alongside Charlie Coyle and Morgan Geekie for what figures to be Boston’s second line. Coyle was also making his preseason debut.

The game was the Bruins’ final exhibition game at home. They play the Kings in Quebec City on Thursday and are at Washington on Sunday. Boston opens the season at Florida on Oct. 8.
